Beowulf Pdf Burton Raffel

It is simply incredible that such an ancient work, coming from a forgotten poet, extant in only a single, damaged manuscript, will forever stand as one of the greatest, most significant stories possessed by the West. Beowulf was composed by a brilliant - absolutely brilliant - poet, who probably gathered together the oral tradition(s) about Beowulf, a mythical North Germanic king of the 6th century, and from them produced this bold and exciting tale that we still read with great pleasure today. But the poet doesn't just have a talent for producing a tale of fantastic adventure and excitement; he also has a great gift for producing sophisticated, lyrical beauty. From the first voyage across the sea to the Danes, to the final songs on horseback around the coast's tower, he achieves a wonderfully lucid, crystal-clear style that is remarkable for its touching simplicity. There are scenes - moments- from Beowulf that stick in one's imagination forever: the multi-colored horses racing along the path; the ancient sword-hilt from that hellish lake which Hrothgar turns over in his aged hands; that final, funeral pyre sending ash and smoke up to God in heaven. All these moments are so memorable, so purely perfect.

Beowulf is a masterpiece, one of only a handful of ancient texts from Northern Europe that we still have! To denigrate it because of a perceived sexism in the author, or because of his Christian beliefs (which, actually, are very significant to the story), is an historical and literary mistake, made, no doubt, because ideological presuppositions have so blinded the reader, that he or she can no longer appreciate great art, or even recognize it. And Beowulf is great art. The Christian themes in Beowulf are fascinating, certainly not the editorial flourishes of an over-zealous monk in the Middle Ages as some have argued. Beowulf defeats the demonic Grendel who counts Cain himself as an ancestor. Grendel represents the entire force of demons, the whole power of Sin.

Is to England what. The Translations of Beowulf Part One of the text you are about to read is from Burton Raffel’s popular 1963 translation of the epic.

Beowulf

So Beowulf the warrior encounters a being who is a part of the blight and curse of original sin itself and literally tears it apart. Then, in his old age, Beowulf basically gives up his kingdom to God the Father in order to fight, in single combat, the oldest of all foes: the dragon, which is a symbol for the crafty Serpent of Eden. The gold and gems he acquires he freely gives to his people, for their benefit and for their children. Finally, he gives his very life in this final quest. He sheds his own blood. It's a fitting end for this Christ-figure - this master, leader, savior, and king - this hero who gives away the spoils to his own people.

It's not an allegory at all; it is simply a well-told story of Beowulf who modeled for his subjects and for all of us those godly qualities of heroism, selflessness, determination, and beneficence. This man is, indeed, one of the finest heroes of any tale, and it's a tale that's been told for 1500 years: Beowulf. 'Who knows when princes And their soldiers, the bravest and strongest of men, Are destined to die, their time ended, Their homes, their halls empty and Still?'
